After completing my B.Prim Ed degree at the university of Port Elizabeth I taught at Clarendon Park Primary for 6 years in their Junior Primary phase. I married my husband, Shaun, in 1989 and accompanied him to Europe where he played professional tennis for one year. After having my daughter, Courtney - a gift from God, we decided to spread our wings once again and became expats teaching in Namibia and Botswana for ten years.
The experiences we had in teaching different cultures and especially working with children with Aids proved to be a real blessing. We gained invaluable insight into how these children cope with demands placed on them when their basic support structures are crumbling around them. It was interesting to note that most of these children did not have access to modern technology,ie Television, and thus showed very little fine motor and gross motor problems at school. I was teaching in all the pre-schools in Botswana.
In May 2007 I joined Nika and we began our venture in treating children with learning problems and trying to bridge the gap between what they are able to do and what is expected from them at school. It has been extremely exciting to see these children improve and gain confidence.
I have recently opened a Tina Cowley Reading franchise after attending training to become a reading therapist.
After 20 years of teaching experience, I continue to be astounded at how our children today are coping with the demands placed on them in the school situation. Our children are a gift from God and we need to do all we can to support and help them to become functioning adults, full of confidence to face all that the world is going to throw at them as they continue to grow! |
